-Mr Ugo Salerno could you tell us a few things about the history of RINA. When did RINA founded? Where is RINA head office located? Ηow many offices is aparted?

RINA began life as a ship classification society in the great international trading port of Genoa in 1861. Since then it has grown and diversified and today is an international group active delivering verification, certification, conformity assessment, marine classification, environmental enhancement, product testing, site and vendor supervision, training and engineering consultancy across a wide range of markets and services.

RINA operates through a network of companies covering Marine, Energy, Infrastructures & Construction, Transport & Logistics, Food & Agriculture, Environment & Sustainability, Finance & Public Institutions and Business Governance. With a turnover of over 294 million Euros in 2013, over 2,500 employees, and 163 offices in 57 countries worldwide, RINA is recognized as an authoritative member of key international organizations and an important contributor to the development of new legislative standards.

-How many vessels are registered with RINA? And what types? How many vessels are registered in RINA Piraeus? How many of them are new buildings?

RINA Services is the RINA company which delivers testing, certification, classification and verification. The marine business is still today the strong heart of RINA. RINA serves marine clients across the whole industry, delivering classic classification services to shipowners and shipyards, supplemented by a wide range of value-added services which help owners get the most out of their people and their fleets. Offshore energy and gas projects benefit from RINA’s technological competences in engineering, verification and project management.

In 2013 the classed fleet grew to 4,761 vessels totalling 33.5m gt. The fleet ended the year well balanced across the bulk, tanker and passenger sectors. 231 new ships built to RINA class totalling 6.1m gt joined the classed fleet.

We have been active in Greece since 1992 and today we employ 25 staff there. We class ships for a wide range of owners and in recent years have seen our Greek business strengthen significantly, so that Greek owners have the second largest slice of our classed fleet, after Italy. In 2013 Greek owners moved seventy-nine vessels to RINA Services with fleets from Starbulk, Phoenix, Technomar, Navitas and Iason choosing RINA class.

RINA is the world leader in classing ferries and ro-ro vessels and has a strong position in the Greek ferry market which is such an important part of the Greek shipping industry. Our specialised personnel in Greece understand ferries and their special demands.

We are also busy in Greece with LNG terminals and other business sectors.

Shipowners responding to better markets began ordering ships again and that strengthened RINA Services’ order book worldwide. The year ended with RINA Services’ newbuilding order book totalling 650 ships of 4.8M gt. Twenty-five of these are passenger vessels, of which seven are major cruise ships. The majority of the order book, 450 vessels, are to be built under RINA class in Asia Pacific shipyards.

Of special interest were new orders for two 620-passenger 40,350 gt cruise ships to be built at Fincantieri for Seabourn Cruises and Silverseas under RINA Class and two 3,500-passenger 124,000 gt cruise ships to be built at MHI, Japan for Costa/Aida, with dual RINA/GL class.

A series of five major ro-ro vessels will be built for Grimaldi at Korea’s Hyundai Mipo, six 50,000 gt oil/chemical tankers for D’Amico will be built at Hyundai Mipo and three 9,000 teu containerships will be built for D’Amato at STX, Korea.

Ignazio Messina chose RINA class for four 45,000 gt ro-ro vessels to be built at STX, as did Greek owner Technomar for two 6,800 teu and five 9,000 teu containerships to be built at HHIC Hanjin’s Subic Bay facility.

They go together with an order for three 38,000 gt bulkers to be built for Greece’s Tomasos, two sister ships for Lamda Maritime and four 43,000 dwt ships for Phoenix to be built in China, increasing the newbuilding orders for RINA from Greek owners.

-What are the types/kinds of surveys? What do you believe about the survey’s ? what is your suggestions about the periodicity of the survey’s.

RINA carries out classification, verification and certification under all international conventions, and survey periods vary according to the international agreement. What RINA does is help owners to plan and schedule surveys so that they cause the minimum disruption and cost. We also work hard to integrate standards wherever possible so that surveys and audits are not duplicated.

-What do you believe about the quality of the new constructions from different countries.

There is no rule that says a ship built in one country is better or worse than in another. What is important to the owner is the selection of the yard. Of course yard standards do vary and owners need to be aware of that. Having a class society that is responsive and sets and maintains high standards is also important in ensuring a good quality vessel. RINA has worked with yards in Europe and Asia and has helped owners to build very good ships everywhere.

-Tell us your opinion about the countries suppliers how qualified are also for repairs?

Ship repair capacity ebbs and flows around the world with demand. Our experience is that the big names in Dubai, Turkey, China, Singapore and Europe deliver good repairs, but we also see useful yards emerging in other countries. Owners should ask their class society for advice before choosing a repair yard, it can help them make a cost-effective decision.

-Greek ship owners have key role in international shipping how RINA can help them improve in the ship worthy of their ships.

Greek owners have invested wisely and caught the newbuilding market at a good time. The Greek-owned fleet leads the world now and I believe their lead will strengthen. With good modern ships bought at the right prices and with skilled technical and commercial staff Greek owners can ride out the current market blips and are well placed to take advantage of continually strengthening world trade. They are also expanding into growth areas such as LNG. And of course Greek owners have good classification societies like RINA to support them! We provide a full range of class and statutory services delivered with responsiveness and a personal touch, backed by services which help owners get more out of their fleet, such as energy saving.

-Environmental protection and climate change are major topics. How RINA can achieve this.

RINA is a green leader. We were the first to develop an index-based Green Plus notation, we are ahead with our DOLPHIN ocean noise standards and we work internationally on UN climate change projects. We can help owners to save energy, be greener and at the same time make that cost-effective. That’s the way to help the world, to harness the self-interest of entrepreneurs like Greek owners. If we can help them save money and reduce waste by going green then they will do it.

-Is RINA planning to expand its activities in Greece further? Do you see the Greek shipping industry as having potential for your office in Greece and if so, how do you plan on expanding business there?

Of course! Greece is important to us, not just for shipping but also for energy and other services. I am happy when I see major Greek owners moving more tonnage to RINA class. That is happening now, but I will not be complacent. I want to roll out more services in Greece and to improve cycle times for plan approval, make us even more responsive than we are now. I’m also busy helping RINA to expand its group services in Greece and the surrounding countries, especially helping owners and groups locally who are moving into new areas such as offshore energy. We are already working on local LNG plants, for example. We have the skills and experience, now we have to deliver them here in Greece to the right people at the right time. That’s my strategy.
